Things Prone To Being Grasped

सावत्थिनिदानं।

Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

At Sāvatthī.

“उपादानिये च, भिक्खवे, धम्मे देसेस्सामि उपादानञ्च। तं सुणाथ।

“Upādāniye ca, bhikkhave, dhamme desessāmi upādānañca. Taṁ suṇātha.

“Bhikkhus, I will teach you the things that are prone to being grasped, and the grasping. Listen …

कतमे च, भिक्खवे, उपादानिया धम्मा, कतमं उपादानं?

Katame ca, bhikkhave, upādāniyā dhammā, katamaṁ upādānaṁ?

What are the things that are prone to being grasped? And what is the grasping?

रूपं, भिक्खवे, उपादानियो धम्मो, यो तत्थ छन्दरागो, तं तत्थ उपादानं।

Rūpaṁ, bhikkhave, upādāniyo dhammo, yo tattha chandarāgo, taṁ tattha upādānaṁ.

Form is something that’s prone to being grasped. The desire and greed for it is the grasping.

विञ्ञाणं उपादानियो धम्मो; यो तत्थ छन्दरागो, तं तत्थ उपादानं।

viññāṇaṁ upādāniyo dhammo; yo tattha chandarāgo, taṁ tattha upādānaṁ.

Consciousness is something that’s prone to being grasped. The desire and greed for it is the grasping.

इमे वुच्चन्ति, भिक्खवे, उपादानिया धम्मा, इदं उपादानन्”ति।

Ime vuccanti, bhikkhave, upādāniyā dhammā, idaṁ upādānan”ti.

These are called the things that are prone to being grasped, and this is the grasping.”
