Seven Matted-Hair Ascetics

एकं समयं भगवा सावत्थियं विहरति पुब्बारामे मिगारमातुपासादे।

Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati pubbārāme migāramātupāsāde.

At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in the Eastern Monastery, the stilt longhouse of Migāra’s mother.

तेन खो पन समयेन भगवा सायन्हसमयं पटिसल्लाना वुट्ठितो बहिद्वारकोट्ठके निसिन्नो होति। अथ खो राजा पसेनदि कोसलो येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि।

Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā sāyanhasamayaṁ paṭisallānā vuṭṭhito bahidvārakoṭṭhake nisinno hoti. Atha kho rājā pasenadi kosalo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi.

Then in the late afternoon, the Buddha came out of retreat and sat outside the gate. Then King Pasenadi of Kosala went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side.

तेन खो पन समयेन सत्त च जटिला सत्त च निगण्ठा सत्त च अचेलका सत्त च एकसाटका सत्त च परिब्बाजका परूळ्हकच्छनखलोमा खारिविविधमादाय भगवतो अविदूरे अतिक्कमन्ति।

Tena kho pana samayena satta ca jaṭilā satta ca nigaṇṭhā satta ca acelakā satta ca ekasāṭakā satta ca paribbājakā parūḷhakacchanakhalomā khārivividhamādāya bhagavato avidūre atikkamanti.

Now at that time seven matted-hair ascetics, seven Jain ascetics, seven naked ascetics, seven one-cloth ascetics, and seven wanderers passed by not far from the Buddha. Their armpits and bodies were hairy, and their nails were long; and they carried their stuff with shoulder-poles.

अथ खो राजा पसेनदि कोसलो उट्ठायासना एकंसं उत्तरासङ्गं करित्वा दक्खिणजाणुमण्डलं पथवियं निहन्त्वा येन ते सत्त च जटिला सत्त च निगण्ठा सत्त च अचेलका सत्त च एकसाटका सत्त च परिब्बाजका तेनञ्जलिं पणामेत्वा तिक्खत्तुं नामं सावेसि: “राजाहं, भन्ते, पसेनदि कोसलो …पे… राजाहं, भन्ते, पसेनदि कोसलो”ति।

Atha kho rājā pasenadi kosalo uṭṭhāyāsanā ekaṁsaṁ uttarāsaṅgaṁ karitvā dakkhiṇajāṇumaṇḍalaṁ pathaviyaṁ nihantvā yena te satta ca jaṭilā satta ca nigaṇṭhā satta ca acelakā satta ca ekasāṭakā satta ca paribbājakā tenañjaliṁ paṇāmetvā tikkhattuṁ nāmaṁ sāvesi: “rājāhaṁ, bhante, pasenadi kosalo …pe… rājāhaṁ, bhante, pasenadi kosalo”ti.

Then King Pasenadi got up from his seat, arranged his robe over one shoulder, knelt with his right knee on the ground, raised his joined palms toward those various ascetics, and pronounced his name three times: “Sirs, I am Pasenadi, king of Kosala! … I am Pasenadi, king of Kosala!”

अथ खो राजा पसेनदि कोसलो अचिरपक्कन्तेसु तेसु सत्तसु च जटिलेसु सत्तसु च निगण्ठेसु सत्तसु च अचेलकेसु सत्तसु च एकसाटकेसु सत्तसु च परिब्बाजकेसु येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो राजा पसेनदि कोसलो भगवन्तं एतदवोच: “ये ते, भन्ते, लोके अरहन्तो वा अरहत्तमग्गं वा समापन्ना एते तेसं अञ्ञतरा”ति।

Atha kho rājā pasenadi kosalo acirapakkantesu tesu sattasu ca jaṭilesu sattasu ca nigaṇṭhesu sattasu ca acelakesu sattasu ca ekasāṭakesu sattasu ca paribbājakesu yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho rājā pasenadi kosalo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “ye te, bhante, loke arahanto vā arahattamaggaṁ vā samāpannā ete tesaṁ aññatarā”ti.

Then, soon after those ascetics had left, King Pasenadi went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him, “Sir, are they among those in the world who are perfected ones or who are on the path to perfection?”

“दुज्जानं खो एतं, महाराज, तया गिहिना कामभोगिना पुत्तसम्बाधसयनं अज्झावसन्तेन कासिकचन्दनं पच्चनुभोन्तेन मालागन्धविलेपनं धारयन्तेन जातरूपरजतं सादियन्तेन: ‘इमे वा अरहन्तो, इमे वा अरहत्तमग्गं समापन्नाऽति।

“Dujjānaṁ kho etaṁ, mahārāja, tayā gihinā kāmabhoginā puttasambādhasayanaṁ ajjhāvasantena kāsikacandanaṁ paccanubhontena mālāgandhavilepanaṁ dhārayantena jātarūparajataṁ sādiyantena: ‘ime vā arahanto, ime vā arahattamaggaṁ samāpannā’ti.

“Great king, as a layman enjoying sensual pleasures, living at home with your children, using sandalwood imported from Kāsi, wearing garlands, perfumes, and makeup, and accepting gold and money, it’s hard for you to know who is perfected or on the path to perfection.

संवासेन खो, महाराज, सीलं वेदितब्बं। तञ्च खो दीघेन अद्धुना, न इत्तरं; मनसिकरोता, नो अमनसिकरोता; पञ्ञवता, नो दुप्पञ्ञेन। संवोहारेन खो, महाराज, सोचेय्यं वेदितब्बं। तञ्च खो दीघेन अद्धुना, न इत्तरं; मनसिकरोता, नो अमनसिकरोता; पञ्ञवता, नो दुप्पञ्ञेन। आपदासु खो, महाराज, थामो वेदितब्बो। सो च खो दीघेन अद्धुना, न इत्तरं; मनसिकरोता, नो अमनसिकरोता; पञ्ञवता, नो दुप्पञ्ञेन। साकच्छाय, खो, महाराज, पञ्ञा वेदितब्बा। सा च खो दीघेन अद्धुना, न इत्तरं; मनसिकरोता, नो अमनसिकरोता; पञ्ञवता, नो दुप्पञ्ञेना”ति।

Saṁvāsena kho, mahārāja, sīlaṁ veditabbaṁ. Tañca kho dīghena addhunā, na ittaraṁ; manasikarotā, no amanasikarotā; paññavatā, no duppaññena. Saṁvohārena kho, mahārāja, soceyyaṁ veditabbaṁ. Tañca kho dīghena addhunā, na ittaraṁ; manasikarotā, no amanasikarotā; paññavatā, no duppaññena. Āpadāsu kho, mahārāja, thāmo veditabbo. So ca kho dīghena addhunā, na ittaraṁ; manasikarotā, no amanasikarotā; paññavatā, no duppaññena. Sākacchāya, kho, mahārāja, paññā veditabbā. Sā ca kho dīghena addhunā, na ittaraṁ; manasikarotā, no amanasikarotā; paññavatā, no duppaññenā”ti.

You can get to know a person’s ethics by living with them. But only after a long time, not casually; only when attentive, not when inattentive; and only by the wise, not the witless. You can get to know a person’s purity by dealing with them. … You can get to know a person’s resilience in times of trouble. … You can get to know a person’s wisdom by discussion. But only after a long time, not casually; only when attentive, not when inattentive; and only by the wise, not the witless.”

“अच्छरियं, भन्ते, अब्भुतं, भन्ते। याव सुभासितमिदं, भन्ते, भगवता: ‘दुज्जानं खो एतं, महाराज, तया गिहिना कामभोगिना पुत्तसम्बाधसयनं अज्झावसन्तेन कासिकचन्दनं पच्चनुभोन्तेन मालागन्धविलेपनं धारयन्तेन जातरूपरजतं सादियन्तेन: “इमे वा अरहन्तो, इमे वा अरहत्तमग्गं समापन्ना”ति। संवासेन खो, महाराज, सीलं वेदितब्बं। तञ्च खो दीघेन अद्धुना, न इत्तरं; मनसिकरोता, नो अमनसिकरोता; पञ्ञवता, नो दुप्पञ्ञेन। संवोहारेन खो, महाराज, सोचेय्यं वेदितब्बं। तञ्च खो दीघेन अद्धुना, न इत्तरं; मनसिकरोता, नो अमनसिकरोता; पञ्ञवता, नो दुप्पञ्ञेन। आपदासु खो, महाराज, थामो वेदितब्बो। सो च खो दीघेन अद्धुना, न इत्तरं; मनसिकरोता, नो अमनसिकरोता; पञ्ञवता, नो दुप्पञ्ञेन। साकच्छाय खो, महाराज, पञ्ञा वेदितब्बा। सा च खो दीघेन अद्धुना, न इत्तरं; मनसिकरोता, नो अमनसिकरोता; पञ्ञवता, नो दुप्पञ्ञेनाऽति।

“Acchariyaṁ, bhante, abbhutaṁ, bhante. Yāva subhāsitamidaṁ, bhante, bhagavatā: ‘dujjānaṁ kho etaṁ, mahārāja, tayā gihinā kāmabhoginā puttasambādhasayanaṁ ajjhāvasantena kāsikacandanaṁ paccanubhontena mālāgandhavilepanaṁ dhārayantena jātarūparajataṁ sādiyantena: “ime vā arahanto, ime vā arahattamaggaṁ samāpannā”ti. Saṁvāsena kho, mahārāja, sīlaṁ veditabbaṁ. Tañca kho dīghena addhunā, na ittaraṁ; manasikarotā, no amanasikarotā; paññavatā, no duppaññena. Saṁvohārena kho, mahārāja, soceyyaṁ veditabbaṁ. Sā ca kho dīghena addhunā, na ittaraṁ; manasikarotā, no amanasikarotā; paññavatā, no duppaññenā’ti.

“It’s incredible, sir, it’s amazing, how well said this was by the Buddha. …

एते, भन्ते, मम पुरिसा चरा ओचरका जनपदं ओचरित्वा आगच्छन्ति। तेहि पठमं ओचिण्णं अहं पच्छा ओसापयिस्सामि। इदानि ते, भन्ते, तं रजोजल्लं पवाहेत्वा सुन्हाता सुविलित्ता कप्पितकेसमस्सू ओदातवत्था पञ्चहि कामगुणेहि समप्पिता समङ्गीभूता परिचारेस्सन्ती”ति।

Ete, bhante, mama purisā carā ocarakā janapadaṁ ocaritvā āgacchanti. Tehi paṭhamaṁ ociṇṇaṁ ahaṁ pacchā osāpayissāmi. Idāni te, bhante, taṁ rajojallaṁ pavāhetvā sunhātā suvilittā kappitakesamassū odātavatthā1 pañcahi kāmaguṇehi samappitā samaṅgībhūtā paricāressantī”ti.

Sir, these are my spies, my undercover agents returning after spying on the country. First they go undercover, then I have them report to me. And now—when they have washed off the dust and dirt, and are nicely bathed and anointed, with hair and beard dressed, and dressed in white—they will amuse themselves, supplied and provided with the five kinds of sensual stimulation.”

अथ खो भगवा एतमत्थं विदित्वा तायं वेलायं इमा गाथायो अभासि:

Atha kho bhagavā etamatthaṁ viditvā tāyaṁ velāyaṁ imā gāthāyo abhāsi:

Then, understanding this matter, on that occasion the Buddha recited these verses:

“न वण्णरूपेन नरो सुजानो, न विस्ससे इत्तरदस्सनेन; सुसञ्ञतानञ्हि वियञ्जनेन, असञ्ञता लोकमिमं चरन्ति।

“Na vaṇṇarūpena naro sujāno, Na vissase ittaradassanena; Susaññatānañhi viyañjanena, Asaññatā lokamimaṁ caranti.

“It’s not easy to know a man by his appearance. You shouldn’t trust them at first sight. For undisciplined men live in this world disguised as the disciplined.

पतिरूपको मत्तिकाकुण्डलोव, लोहड्ढमासोव सुवण्णछन्नो; चरन्ति लोके परिवारछन्ना, अन्तो असुद्धा बहि सोभमाना”ति।

Patirūpako mattikākuṇḍalova, Lohaḍḍhamāsova suvaṇṇachanno; Caranti loke2 parivārachannā, Anto asuddhā bahi sobhamānā”ti.

Like a fake earring made of clay, like a copper halfpenny covered with gold, they live hidden in the world, corrupt inside but impressive outside.”
