An Ascetic’s Happiness
“ปญฺจิมานิ, ภิกฺขเว, สมณทุกฺขานิฯ กตมานิ ปญฺจ? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ อสนฺตุฏฺโฐ โหติ อิตรีตเรน จีวเรน, อสนฺตุฏฺโฐ โหติ อิตรีตเรน ปิณฺฑปาเตน, อสนฺตุฏฺโฐ โหติ อิตรีตเรน เสนาสเนน, อสนฺตุฏฺโฐ โหติ อิตรีตเรน คิลานปฺปจฺจยเภสชฺชปริกฺขาเรน, อนภิรโต จ พฺรหฺมจริยํ จรติฯ อิมานิ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปญฺจ สมณทุกฺขานิฯ
“Bhikkhus, there are these five kinds of suffering for an ascetic. What five? It’s when a bhikkhu is not content with any kind of robe, almsfood, lodging, and medicines and supplies for the sick. And they lead the spiritual life dissatisfied. These are five kinds of suffering for an ascetic.
ปญฺจิมานิ, ภิกฺขเว, สมณสุขานิฯ กตมานิ ปญฺจ? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ สนฺตุฏฺโฐ โหติ อิตรีตเรน จีวเรน, สนฺตุฏฺโฐ โหติ อิตรีตเรน ปิณฺฑปาเตน, สนฺตุฏฺโฐ โหติ อิตรีตเรน เสนาสเนน, สนฺตุฏฺโฐ โหติ อิตรีตเรน คิลานปฺปจฺจยเภสชฺชปริกฺขาเรน, อภิรโต จ พฺรหฺมจริยํ จรติฯ อิมานิ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปญฺจ สมณสุขานี”ติฯ
There are these five kinds of happiness for an ascetic. What five? It’s when a bhikkhu is content with any kind of robe, almsfood, lodging, and medicines and supplies for the sick. And they lead the spiritual life satisfied. These are five kinds of happiness for an ascetic.”
