Tatra kho āyasmā sāriputto bhikkhū āmantesi: “āvuso bhikkhave”ti.

There Venerable Sāriputta addressed the bhikkhus: “Friends, bhikkhus!”

“आवुसो”ति खो ते भिक्खू आयस्मतो सारिपुत्तस्स पच्चस्सोसुं। आयस्मा सारिपुत्तो एतदवोच:

“Āvuso”ti kho te bhikkhū āyasmato sāriputtassa paccassosuṁ. Āyasmā sāriputto etadavoca:

“Friend,” they replied. Sāriputta said this:

“पञ्चहावुसो, धम्मेहि समन्नागतो भिक्खु अलं साकच्छो सब्रह्मचारीनं। कतमेहि पञ्चहि?

“Pañcahāvuso, dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu alaṁ sākaccho sabrahmacārīnaṁ. Katamehi pañcahi?

“A bhikkhu with five qualities is fit to hold a discussion with their spiritual companions. What five?

Idhāvuso, bhikkhu attanā ca sīlasampanno hoti, sīlasampadākathāya ca āgataṁ pañhaṁ byākattā hoti;

A bhikkhu is personally accomplished in ethics, and answers questions that come up when discussing accomplishment in ethics.

अत्तना च समाधिसम्पन्नो होति, समाधिसम्पदाकथाय च आगतं पञ्हं ब्याकत्ता होति;

attanā ca samādhisampanno hoti, samādhisampadākathāya ca āgataṁ pañhaṁ byākattā hoti;

attanā ca vimuttisampanno hoti, vimuttisampadākathāya ca āgataṁ pañhaṁ byākattā hoti;

They’re personally accomplished in freedom, …

अत्तना च विमुत्तिञाणदस्सनसम्पन्नो होति, विमुत्तिञाणदस्सनसम्पदाकथाय च आगतं पञ्हं ब्याकत्ता होति।

attanā ca vimuttiñāṇadassanasampanno hoti, vimuttiñāṇadassanasampadākathāya ca āgataṁ pañhaṁ byākattā hoti.

They’re personally accomplished in the knowledge and vision of freedom, and they answer questions that come up when discussing accomplishment in the knowledge and vision of freedom.

इमेहि खो, आवुसो, पञ्चहि धम्मेहि समन्नागतो भिक्खु अलं साकच्छो सब्रह्मचारीनन्”ति।

Imehi kho, āvuso, pañcahi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu alaṁ sākaccho sabrahmacārīnan”ti.

A bhikkhu with these five qualities is fit to hold a discussion with their spiritual companions.”
