สาวตฺถิยํ วิหรติฯ
At Sāvatthī.
อถ โข เทฺว ภิกฺขู สหายกา อายสฺมโต มหากปฺปินสฺส สทฺธิวิหาริโน เยน ภควา เตนุปสงฺกมึสุฯ
Then two bhikkhus who were companions, pupils of Venerable Mahākappina, went to see the Buddha.
อทฺทสา โข ภควา เต ภิกฺขู ทูรโตว อาคจฺฉนฺเตฯ ทิสฺวาน ภิกฺขู อามนฺเตสิ: “ปสฺสถ โน ตุเมฺห, ภิกฺขเว, เอเต ภิกฺขู สหายเก อาคจฺฉนฺเต กปฺปินสฺส สทฺธิวิหาริโน”ติ?
The Buddha saw them coming off in the distance, and addressed the bhikkhus: “Bhikkhus, do you see those monks coming who are companions, pupils of Venerable Mahākappina?”
“เอวํ, ภนฺเต”ฯ
“Yes, sir.”
“เอเต โข เต ภิกฺขู มหิทฺธิกา มหานุภาวาฯ น จ สา สมาปตฺติ สุลภรูปา, ยา เตหิ ภิกฺขูหิ อสมาปนฺนปุพฺพาฯ ยสฺส จตฺถาย กุลปุตฺตา สมฺมเทว อคารสฺมา อนคาริยํ ปพฺพชนฺติ ตทนุตฺตรํ พฺรหฺมจริยปริโยสานํ ทิฏฺเฐว ธมฺเม สยํ อภิญฺญา สจฺฉิกตฺวา อุปสมฺปชฺช วิหรนฺตี”ติฯ
“Those bhikkhus are very mighty and powerful. It’s not easy to find an attainment that they have not already attained. And they’ve realized the supreme end of the spiritual path in this very life. They live having achieved with their own insight the goal for which gentlemen rightly go forth from the lay life to homelessness.”
อิทมโวจ ภควาฯ อิทํ วตฺวาน สุคโต อถาปรํ เอตทโวจ สตฺถา:
That is what the Buddha said. Then the Holy One, the Teacher, went on to say:
“สหายาวติเม ภิกฺขู, จิรรตฺตํ สเมติกา; สเมติ เนสํ สทฺธมฺโม, ธมฺเม พุทฺธปฺปเวทิเตฯ
“These companion bhikkhus have been together for a long time. The true teaching has brought them together, the teaching proclaimed by the Buddha.
สุวินีตา กปฺปิเนน, ธมฺเม อริยปฺปเวทิเต; ธาเรนฺติ อนฺติมํ เทหํ, เชตฺวา มารํ สวาหินินฺ”ติฯ
They’ve been well trained by Kappina in the teaching proclaimed by the Noble One. They bear their final body, having vanquished Māra and his mount.”
ทฺวาทสมํฯ
ภิกฺขุวคฺโค ปฐโมฯ
ตสฺสุทฺทานํ
โกลิโต อุปติโสฺส จ, ฆโฏ จาปิ ปวุจฺจติ; นโว สุชาโต ภทฺทิ จ, วิสาโข นนฺโท ติโสฺส จ; เถรนาโม จ กปฺปิโน, สหาเยน จ ทฺวาทสาติฯ
ภิกฺขุสํยุตฺตํ สมตฺตํฯ
