Fitting Deeds
අථ ඛෝ අනාථපිණ්ඩිකෝ ගහපති යේන භගවා තේනුපසඞ්කමි; උපසඞ්කමිත්වා භගවන්තං අභිවාදේත්වා ඒකමන්තං නිසීදි. ඒකමන්තං නිසින්නං ඛෝ අනාථපිණ්ඩිකං ගහපතිං භගවා ඒතදවෝච:
Then the householder Anāthapiṇḍika went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him:
“චත්තාරෝමේ, ගහපති, ධම්මා ඉට්ඨා කන්තා මනාපා දුල්ලභා ලෝකස්මිං. කතමේ චත්තාරෝ? භෝගා මේ උප්පජ්ජන්තු සහධම්මේනාති, අයං පඨමෝ ධම්මෝ ඉට්ඨෝ කන්තෝ මනාපෝ දුල්ලභෝ ලෝකස්මිං.
“Householder, these four things that are likable, desirable, and agreeable are hard to get in the world. What four? The first thing is the wish: ‘May wealth come to me by legitimate means!’
භෝගේ ලද්ධා සහධම්මේන යසෝ මේ ආගච්ඡතු සහ ඤාතීහි සහ උපජ්ඣායේහීති, අයං දුතියෝ ධම්මෝ ඉට්ඨෝ කන්තෝ මනාපෝ දුල්ලභෝ ලෝකස්මිං.
The second thing, having got wealth by legitimate means, is the wish: ‘May fame come to me, together with my family and teachers.’
භෝගේ ලද්ධා සහධම්මේන යසං ලද්ධා සහ ඤාතීහි සහ උපජ්ඣායේහි චිරං ජීවාමි දීඝමායුං පාලේමීති, අයං තතියෝ ධම්මෝ ඉට්ඨෝ කන්තෝ මනාපෝ දුල්ලභෝ ලෝකස්මිං.
The third thing, having got wealth and fame, is the wish: ‘May I live long, keeping alive for a long time!’
භෝගේ ලද්ධා සහධම්මේන යසං ලද්ධා සහ ඤාතීහි සහ උපජ්ඣායේහි චිරං ජීවිත්වා දීඝමායුං පාලේත්වා කායස්ස භේදා පරං මරණා සුගතිං සග්ගං ලෝකං උපපජ්ජාමීති, අයං චතුත්ථෝ ධම්මෝ ඉට්ඨෝ කන්තෝ මනාපෝ දුල්ලභෝ ලෝකස්මිං. ඉමේ ඛෝ, ගහපති, චත්තාරෝ ධම්මා ඉට්ඨා කන්තා මනාපා දුල්ලභා ලෝකස්මිං.
The fourth thing, having got wealth, fame, and long life, is the wish: ‘When my body breaks up, after death, may I be reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm!’ These are the four things that are likable, desirable, and agreeable, but hard to get in the world.
ඉමේසං ඛෝ, ගහපති, චතුන්නං ධම්මානං ඉට්ඨානං කන්තානං මනාපානං දුල්ලභානං ලෝකස්මිං චත්තාරෝ ධම්මා පටිලාභාය සංවත්තන්ති. කතමේ චත්තාරෝ? සද්ධාසම්පදා, සීලසම්පදා, චාගසම්පදා, පඤ්ඤාසම්පදා.
These next four things lead to the getting of those four things. What four? Accomplishment in faith, ethics, generosity, and wisdom.
කතමා ච, ගහපති, සද්ධාසම්පදා? ඉධ, ගහපති, අරියසාවකෝ සද්ධෝ හෝති, සද්දහති තථාගතස්ස බෝධිං: ‘ඉතිපි සෝ භගවා අරහං සම්මාසම්බුද්ධෝ විජ්ජාචරණසම්පන්නෝ සුගතෝ ලෝකවිදූ අනුත්තරෝ පුරිසදම්මසාරථි, සත්ථා දේවමනුස්සානං බුද්ධෝ භගවා(අ)ති. අයං වුච්චති, ගහපති, සද්ධාසම්පදා.
And what is accomplishment in faith? It’s when a noble disciple has faith in the Realized One’s awakening: ‘That Blessed One is perfected, a fully awakened Buddha, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, holy, knower of the world, supreme guide for those who wish to train, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed.’ This is called accomplishment in faith.
කතමා ච, ගහපති, සීලසම්පදා? ඉධ, ගහපති, අරියසාවකෝ පාණාතිපාතා පටිවිරතෝ හෝති …පේ… සුරාමේරයමජ්ජපමාදට්ඨානා පටිවිරතෝ හෝති. අයං වුච්චති, ගහපති, සීලසම්පදා.
And what is accomplishment in ethics? It’s when a noble disciple doesn’t kill living creatures, steal, commit sexual misconduct, lie, or take alcoholic drinks that cause negligence. This is called accomplishment in ethics.
කතමා ච, ගහපති, චාගසම්පදා? ඉධ, ගහපති, අරියසාවකෝ විගතමලමච්ඡේරේන චේතසා අගාරං අජ්ඣාවසති මුත්තචාගෝ පයතපාණි වෝසග්ගරතෝ යාචයෝගෝ දානසංවිභාගරතෝ. අයං වුච්චති, ගහපති, චාගසම්පදා.
And what is accomplishment in generosity? It’s when a noble disciple lives at home rid of the stain of stinginess, freely generous, open-handed, loving to let go, committed to charity, loving to give and to share. This is called accomplishment in generosity.
කතමා ච, ගහපති, පඤ්ඤාසම්පදා? අභිජ්ඣාවිසමලෝභාභිභූතේන, ගහපති, චේතසා විහරන්තෝ අකිච්චං කරෝති, කිච්චං අපරාධේති. අකිච්චං කරෝන්තෝ කිච්චං අපරාධේන්තෝ යසා ච සුඛා ච ධංසති. බ්යාපාදාභිභූතේන, ගහපති, චේතසා විහරන්තෝ අකිච්චං කරෝති, කිච්චං අපරාධේති. අකිච්චං කරෝන්තෝ කිච්චං අපරාධේන්තෝ යසා ච සුඛා ච ධංසති. ථිනමිද්ධාභිභූතේන, ගහපති, චේතසා විහරන්තෝ අකිච්චං කරෝති කිච්චං අපරාධේති. අකිච්චං කරෝන්තෝ කිච්චං අපරාධේන්තෝ යසා ච සුඛා ච ධංසති. උද්ධච්චකුක්කුච්චාභිභූතේන, ගහපති, චේතසා විහරන්තෝ අකිච්චං කරෝති, කිච්චං අපරාධේති. අකිච්චං කරෝන්තෝ කිච්චං අපරාධේන්තෝ යසා ච සුඛා ච ධංසති. විචිකිච්ඡාභිභූතේන, ගහපති, චේතසා විහරන්තෝ අකිච්චං කරෝති, කිච්චං අපරාධේති. අකිච්චං කරෝන්තෝ කිච්චං අපරාධේන්තෝ යසා ච සුඛා ච ධංසති.
And what is accomplishment in wisdom? When your heart is mastered by covetousness and immoral greed, you do what you shouldn’t, and fail to do what you should. Your fame and happiness fall to dust. When your heart is mastered by ill will … dullness and drowsiness … restlessness and remorse … doubt, you do what you shouldn’t, and fail to do what you should. Your fame and happiness fall to dust.
ස ඛෝ සෝ, ගහපති, අරියසාවකෝ අභිජ්ඣාවිසමලෝභෝ චිත්තස්ස උපක්කිලේසෝති, ඉති විදිත්වා අභිජ්ඣාවිසමලෝභං චිත්තස්ස උපක්කිලේසං පජහති. බ්යාපාදෝ චිත්තස්ස උපක්කිලේසෝති, ඉති විදිත්වා බ්යාපාදං චිත්තස්ස උපක්කිලේසං පජහති. ථිනමිද්ධං චිත්තස්ස උපක්කිලේසෝති, ඉති විදිත්වා ථිනමිද්ධං චිත්තස්ස උපක්කිලේසං පජහති. උද්ධච්චකුක්කුච්චං චිත්තස්ස උපක්කිලේසෝති, ඉති විදිත්වා උද්ධච්චකුක්කුච්චං චිත්තස්ස උපක්කිලේසං පජහති. විචිකිච්ඡා චිත්තස්ස උපක්කිලේසෝති, ඉති විදිත්වා විචිකිච්ඡං චිත්තස්ස උපක්කිලේසං පජහති.
Knowing that ‘covetousness and immoral greed are corruptions of the mind’, that noble disciple gives them up. Knowing that ‘ill will …’ … ‘dullness and drowsiness …’ … ‘restlessness and remorse …’ … ‘doubt is a corruption of the mind’, that noble disciple gives it up.
යතෝ ච ඛෝ, ගහපති, අරියසාවකස්ස අභිජ්ඣාවිසමලෝභෝ චිත්තස්ස උපක්කිලේසෝති, ඉති විදිත්වා අභිජ්ඣාවිසමලෝභෝ චිත්තස්ස උපක්කිලේසෝ පහීනෝ හෝති. බ්යාපාදෝ චිත්තස්ස උපක්කිලේසෝති, ඉති විදිත්වා බ්යාපාදෝ චිත්තස්ස උපක්කිලේසෝ පහීනෝ හෝති. ථිනමිද්ධං චිත්තස්ස උපක්කිලේසෝති, ඉති විදිත්වා ථිනමිද්ධං චිත්තස්ස උපක්කිලේසෝ පහීනෝ හෝති. උද්ධච්චකුක්කුච්චං චිත්තස්ස උපක්කිලේසෝති, ඉති විදිත්වා උද්ධච්චකුක්කුච්චං චිත්තස්ස උපක්කිලේසෝ පහීනෝ හෝති. විචිකිච්ඡා චිත්තස්ස උපක්කිලේසෝති, ඉති විදිත්වා විචිකිච්ඡා චිත්තස්ස උපක්කිලේසෝ පහීනෝ හෝති. අයං වුච්චති, ගහපති, අරියසාවකෝ මහාපඤ්ඤෝ පුථුපඤ්ඤෝ ආපාතදසෝ පඤ්ඤාසම්පන්නෝ. අයං වුච්චති, ගහපති, පඤ්ඤාසම්පදා. ඉමේසං ඛෝ, ගහපති, චතුන්නං ධම්මානං ඉට්ඨානං කන්තානං මනාපානං දුල්ලභානං ලෝකස්මිං ඉමේ චත්තාරෝ ධම්මා පටිලාභාය සංවත්තන්ති.
When a noble disciple has given up these things, they’re called ‘a noble disciple of great wisdom, of widespread wisdom, who sees what matters, and is accomplished in wisdom’. This is called accomplishment in wisdom. These are the four things that lead to the getting of the four things that are likable, desirable, and agreeable, but hard to get in the world.
ස ඛෝ සෝ, ගහපති, අරියසාවකෝ උට්ඨානවීරියාධිගතේහි භෝගේහි බාහාබලපරිචිතේහි සේදාවක්ඛිත්තේහි ධම්මිකේහි ධම්මලද්ධේහි චත්තාරි පත්තකම්මානි කත්තා හෝති. කතමානි චත්තාරි?
There are four fitting deeds that a noble disciple does with the legitimate wealth he has earned by his efforts and initiative, built up with his own hands, gathered by the sweat of the brow. What four?
ඉධ, ගහපති, අරියසාවකෝ උට්ඨානවීරියාධිගතේහි භෝගේහි බාහාබලපරිචිතේහි සේදාවක්ඛිත්තේහි ධම්මිකේහි ධම්මලද්ධේහි අත්තානං සුඛේති පීණේති සම්මා සුඛං පරිහරති. මාතාපිතරෝ සුඛේති පීණේති සම්මා සුඛං පරිහරති. පුත්තදාරදාසකම්මකරපෝරිසේ සුඛේති පීණේති සම්මා සුඛං පරිහරති. මිත්තාමච්චේ සුඛේති පීණේති සම්මා සුඛං පරිහරති. ඉදමස්ස පඨමං ඨානගතං හෝති පත්තගතං ආයතනසෝ පරිභුත්තං.
To start with, with his legitimate wealth he makes himself happy and pleased, keeping himself properly happy. He makes his mother and father happy … He makes his children, partners, bondservants, workers, and staff happy … He makes his friends and colleagues happy … This is his first expenditure in an appropriate sphere on a deserved and fitting cause.
පුන චපරං, ගහපති, අරියසාවකෝ උට්ඨානවීරියාධිගතේහි භෝගේහි බාහාබලපරිචිතේහි සේදාවක්ඛිත්තේහි ධම්මිකේහි ධම්මලද්ධේහි යා තා හෝන්ති ආපදා අග්ගිතෝ වා උදකතෝ වා රාජතෝ වා චෝරතෝ වා අප්පියතෝ වා දායාදතෝ, තථාරූපාසු ආපදාසු පරියෝධාය සංවත්තති. සෝත්ථිං අත්තානං කරෝති. ඉදමස්ස දුතියං ඨානගතං හෝති පත්තගතං ආයතනසෝ පරිභුත්තං.
Furthermore, with his legitimate wealth he defends himself against threats from such things as fire, flood, rulers, bandits, or unloved heirs. He keeps himself safe. This is his second expenditure in an appropriate sphere on a deserved and fitting cause.
පුන චපරං, ගහපති, අරියසාවකෝ උට්ඨානවීරියාධිගතේහි භෝගේහි බාහාබලපරිචිතේහි සේදාවක්ඛිත්තේහි ධම්මිකේහි ධම්මලද්ධේහි පඤ්චබලිං කත්තා හෝති—ඤාතිබලිං, අතිථිබලිං, පුබ්බපේතබලිං, රාජබලිං, දේවතාබලිං. ඉදමස්ස තතියං ඨානගතං හෝති පත්තගතං ආයතනසෝ පරිභුත්තං.
Furthermore, with his legitimate wealth he makes five spirit-offerings: to relatives, guests, ancestors, king, and deities. This is his third expenditure in an appropriate sphere on a deserved and fitting cause.
පුන චපරං, ගහපති, අරියසාවකෝ උට්ඨානවීරියාධිගතේහි භෝගේහි බාහාබලපරිචිතේහි සේදාවක්ඛිත්තේහි ධම්මිකේහි ධම්මලද්ධේහි යේ තේ සමණබ්රාහ්මණා මදප්පමාදා පටිවිරතා ඛන්තිසෝරච්චේ නිවිට්ඨා ඒකමත්තානං දමේන්ති, ඒකමත්තානං සමේන්ති, ඒකමත්තානං පරිනිබ්බාපේන්ති, තථාරූපේසු සමණබ්රාහ්මණේසු උද්ධග්ගිකං දක්ඛිණං පතිට්ඨාපේති සෝවග්ගිකං සුඛවිපාකං සග්ගසංවත්තනිකං. ඉදමස්ස චතුත්ථං ඨානගතං හෝති පත්තගතං ආයතනසෝ පරිභුත්තං.
Furthermore, with his legitimate wealth he establishes an uplifting religious donation for ascetics and brahmins—those who avoid intoxication and negligence, are settled in patience and gentleness, and who tame, calm, and extinguish themselves—that’s conducive to heaven, ripens in happiness, and leads to heaven. This is his fourth expenditure in an appropriate sphere on a deserved and fitting cause.
ස ඛෝ සෝ, ගහපති, අරියසාවකෝ උට්ඨානවීරියාධිගතේහි භෝගේහි බාහාබලපරිචිතේහි සේදාවක්ඛිත්තේහි ධම්මිකේහි ධම්මලද්ධේහි ඉමානි චත්තාරි පත්තකම්මානි කත්තා හෝති.
'These are the four fitting deeds that a noble disciple does with the legitimate wealth he has earned by his efforts and initiative, built up with his own hands, gathered by the sweat of the brow.

Whatever wealth is spent on something other than these four fitting deeds is said to not be expenditure in an appropriate sphere on a deserved and fitting cause. But whatever wealth is spent on these four fitting deeds is said to be expenditure in an appropriate sphere on a deserved and fitting cause.
භුත්තා භෝගා භතා භච්චා, විතිණ්ණා ආපදාසු මේ; උද්ධග්ගා දක්ඛිණා දින්නා, අථෝ පඤ්චබලී කතා; උපට්ඨිතා සීලවන්තෝ, සඤ්ඤතා බ්රහ්මචාරයෝ.
‘I’ve enjoyed my wealth,
supporting those who depend on me; I’ve overcome losses; I’ve given uplifting religious donations; and made the five spirit-offerings. I have served the ethical and disciplined spiritual practitioners.
යදත්ථං භෝගං ඉච්ඡේය්ය, පණ්ඩිතෝ ඝරමාවසං; සෝ මේ අත්ථෝ අනුප්පත්තෝ, කතං අනනුතාපියං.
I’ve achieved the purpose for which an astute lay person wishes to gain wealth. I don’t regret what I’ve done.’
ඒතං අනුස්සරං මච්චෝ, අරියධම්මේ ඨිතෝ නරෝ; ඉධේව නං පසංසන්ති, පේච්ච සග්ගේ පමෝදතී”ති.
A mortal person who recollects this stands firm in the teaching of the noble ones. They’re praised in this life, and they depart to rejoice in heaven.”
