Paṭisallānasutta
Retreat
“पटिसल्लाने, भिक्खवे, योगमापज्जथ। पटिसल्लीनो, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु यथाभूतं पजानाति। किञ्च यथाभूतं पजानाति?
“Paṭisallāne, bhikkhave, yogamāpajjatha. Paṭisallīno, bhikkhave, bhikkhu yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti. Kiñca yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti?
“Bhikkhus, meditate in retreat. A bhikkhu in retreat truly understands. What do they truly understand?
‘चक्खु अनिच्चन्ऽति यथाभूतं पजानाति; ‘रूपा अनिच्चाऽति यथाभूतं पजानाति; ‘चक्खुविञ्ञाणं अनिच्चन्ऽति यथाभूतं पजानाति; ‘चक्खुसम्फस्सो अनिच्चोऽति यथाभूतं पजानाति …पे… ‘यम्पिदं मनोसम्फस्सपच्चया उप्पज्जति वेदयितं सुखं वा दुक्खं वा अदुक्खमसुखं वा तम्पि अनिच्चन्ऽति यथाभूतं पजानाति।
‘Cakkhu aniccan’ti yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti; ‘rūpā aniccā’ti yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti; ‘cakkhuviññāṇaṁ aniccan’ti yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti; ‘cakkhusamphasso anicco’ti yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti …pe… ‘yampidaṁ manosamphassapaccayā uppajjati vedayitaṁ sukhaṁ vā dukkhaṁ vā adukkhamasukhaṁ vā tampi aniccan’ti yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti.
They truly understand that the eye is impermanent. They truly understand that sights … eye consciousness … eye contact … the pleasant, painful, or neutral feeling that arises conditioned by mind contact is impermanent.
पटिसल्लाने, भिक्खवे, योगमापज्जथ। पटिसल्लीनो, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु यथाभूतं पजानाती”ति।
Paṭisallāne, bhikkhave, yogamāpajjatha. Paṭisallīno, bhikkhave, bhikkhu yathābhūtaṁ pajānātī”ti.
Bhikkhus, meditate in retreat. A bhikkhu in retreat truly understands.”
