Not of the Flesh
“अत्थि, भिक्खवे, सामिसा पीति, अत्थि निरामिसा पीति, अत्थि निरामिसा निरामिसतरा पीति;
“Atthi, bhikkhave, sāmisā pīti, atthi nirāmisā pīti, atthi nirāmisā nirāmisatarā pīti;
“Bhikkhus, there is (mental) joy of the flesh, (mental) joy not of the flesh, and (mental) joy even more spiritual than that not of the flesh.
अत्थि सामिसं सुखं, अत्थि निरामिसं सुखं, अत्थि निरामिसा निरामिसतरं सुखं;
atthi sāmisaṁ sukhaṁ, atthi nirāmisaṁ sukhaṁ, atthi nirāmisā nirāmisataraṁ sukhaṁ;
There is pleasure of the flesh, pleasure not of the flesh, and pleasure even more spiritual that that not of the flesh.
अत्थि सामिसा उपेक्खा, अत्थि निरामिसा उपेक्खा, अत्थि निरामिसा निरामिसतरा उपेक्खा;
atthi sāmisā upekkhā, atthi nirāmisā upekkhā, atthi nirāmisā nirāmisatarā upekkhā;
There is equanimity of the flesh, equanimity not of the flesh, and equanimity even more spiritual than that not of the flesh.
अत्थि सामिसो विमोक्खो, अत्थि निरामिसो विमोक्खो, अत्थि निरामिसा निरामिसतरो विमोक्खो।
atthi sāmiso vimokkho, atthi nirāmiso vimokkho, atthi nirāmisā nirāmisataro vimokkho.
There is liberation of the flesh, liberation not of the flesh, and liberation even more spiritual than that not of the flesh.
कतमा च, भिक्खवे, सामिसा पीति? पञ्चिमे, भिक्खवे, कामगुणा। कतमे पञ्च? चक्खुविञ्ञेय्या रूपा इट्ठा कन्ता मनापा पियरूपा कामूपसंहिता रजनीया …पे… कायविञ्ञेय्या फोट्ठब्बा इट्ठा कन्ता मनापा पियरूपा कामूपसंहिता रजनीया। इमे खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्च कामगुणा। या खो, भिक्खवे, इमे पञ्च कामगुणे पटिच्च उप्पज्जति पीति, अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, सामिसा पीति।
Katamā ca, bhikkhave, sāmisā pīti? Pañcime, bhikkhave, kāmaguṇā. Katame pañca? Cakkhuviññeyyā rūpā iṭṭhā kantā manāpā piyarūpā kāmūpasaṁhitā rajanīyā …pe… kāyaviññeyyā phoṭṭhabbā iṭṭhā kantā manāpā piyarūpā kāmūpasaṁhitā rajanīyā. Ime kho, bhikkhave, pañca kāmaguṇā. Yā kho, bhikkhave, ime pañca kāmaguṇe paṭicca uppajjati pīti, ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, sāmisā pīti.
And what is (mental) joy of the flesh? There are these five kinds of sensual stimulation. What five? Sights known by the eye that are likable, desirable, agreeable, pleasant, sensual, and arousing. Sounds … Smells … Tastes … Touches known by the body that are likable, desirable, agreeable, pleasant, sensual, and arousing. These are the five kinds of sensual stimulation. The (mental) joy that arises from these five kinds of sensual stimulation is called (mental) joy of the flesh.
कतमा च, भिक्खवे, निरामिसा पीति? इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु विविच्चेव कामेहि विविच्च अकुसलेहि धम्मेहि सवितक्कं सविचारं विवेकजं पीतिसुखं पठमं झानं उपसम्पज्ज विहरति। वितक्कविचारानं वूपसमा अज्झत्तं सम्पसादनं चेतसो एकोदिभावं अवितक्कं अविचारं समाधिजं पीतिसुखं दुतियं झानं उपसम्पज्ज विहरति। अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, निरामिसा पीति।
Katamā ca, bhikkhave, nirāmisā pīti? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu vivicceva kāmehi vivicca akusalehi dhammehi savitakkaṁ savicāraṁ vivekajaṁ pītisukhaṁ paṭhamaṁ jhānaṁ upasampajja viharati. Vitakkavicārānaṁ vūpasamā ajjhattaṁ sampasādanaṁ cetaso ekodibhāvaṁ avitakkaṁ avicāraṁ samādhijaṁ pītisukhaṁ dutiyaṁ jhānaṁ upasampajja viharati. Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, nirāmisā pīti.
And what is (mental) joy not of the flesh? It’s when a bhikkhu, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unskillful qualities, enters and remains in the first jhāna, which has the (mental) joy and (bodily) pleasure born of seclusion, while thougths are being born and sustained analysis is going on. As the thougths being born and the sustained analysis going on are stilled, they enter and remain in the second jhāna, which has the (mental) joy and (bodily) pleasure born of samādhi, with internal clarity and mind at one, without thougths being born and without sustained analysis going on. This is called (mental) joy not of the flesh.
कतमा च, भिक्खवे, निरामिसा निरामिसतरा पीति? या खो, भिक्खवे, खीणासवस्स भिक्खुनो रागा चित्तं विमुत्तं पच्चवेक्खतो, दोसा चित्तं विमुत्तं पच्चवेक्खतो, मोहा चित्तं विमुत्तं पच्चवेक्खतो उप्पज्जति पीति, अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, निरामिसा निरामिसतरा पीति।
Katamā ca, bhikkhave, nirāmisā nirāmisatarā pīti? Yā kho, bhikkhave, khīṇāsavassa bhikkhuno rāgā cittaṁ vimuttaṁ paccavekkhato, dosā cittaṁ vimuttaṁ paccavekkhato, mohā cittaṁ vimuttaṁ paccavekkhato uppajjati pīti, ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, nirāmisā nirāmisatarā pīti.
And what is (mental) joy even more spiritual than that not of the flesh? When a bhikkhu who has ended the defilements reviews their mind free from greed, hate, and delusion, (mental) joy arises. This is called (mental) joy even more spiritual than that not of the flesh.

And what is pleasure of the flesh? Bhikkhus, there are these five kinds of sensual stimulation. What five? Sights known by the eye that are likable, desirable, agreeable, pleasant, sensual, and arousing. Sounds … Smells … Tastes … Touches known by the body that are likable, desirable, agreeable, pleasant, sensual, and arousing. These are the five kinds of sensual stimulation. The pleasure and happiness that arise from these five kinds of sensual stimulation is called pleasure of the flesh.
कतमञ्च, भिक्खवे, निरामिसं सुखं? इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु विविच्चेव कामेहि विविच्च अकुसलेहि धम्मेहि सवितक्कं सविचारं विवेकजं पीतिसुखं पठमं झानं उपसम्पज्ज विहरति। वितक्कविचारानं वूपसमा अज्झत्तं सम्पसादनं चेतसो एकोदिभावं अवितक्कं अविचारं समाधिजं पीतिसुखं दुतियं झानं उपसम्पज्ज विहरति। पीतिया च विरागा उपेक्खको च विहरति सतो च सम्पजानो सुखञ्च कायेन पटिसंवेदेति, यं तं अरिया आचिक्खन्ति: ‘उपेक्खको सतिमा सुखविहारीऽति ततियं झानं उपसम्पज्ज विहरति। इदं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, निरामिसं सुखं।
Katamañca, bhikkhave, nirāmisaṁ sukhaṁ? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu vivicceva kāmehi vivicca akusalehi dhammehi savitakkaṁ savicāraṁ vivekajaṁ pītisukhaṁ paṭhamaṁ jhānaṁ upasampajja viharati. Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, nirāmisaṁ sukhaṁ.
And what is pleasure not of the flesh? It’s when a bhikkhu, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unskillful qualities, enters and remains in the first jhāna, which has the (mental) joy and (bodily) pleasure born of seclusion, while thougths are being born and sustained analysis is going on. As the thougths being born and the sustained analysis going on are stilled, they enter and remain in the second jhāna, which has the (mental) joy and (bodily) pleasure born of samādhi, with internal clarity and mind at one, without thougths being born and without sustained analysis going on. And with the fading away of (mental) joy, they enter and remain in the third jhāna, where they meditate with equanimity, mindful and aware, personally feeling deeply the (bodily) pleasure of which the noble ones declare, ‘Equanimous and mindful, a pleasure is to meditate.’ This is called pleasure not of the flesh.
कतमञ्च, भिक्खवे, निरामिसा निरामिसतरं सुखं? यं खो, भिक्खवे, खीणासवस्स भिक्खुनो रागा चित्तं विमुत्तं पच्चवेक्खतो, दोसा चित्तं विमुत्तं पच्चवेक्खतो, मोहा चित्तं विमुत्तं पच्चवेक्खतो उप्पज्जति सुखं सोमनस्सं, इदं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, निरामिसा निरामिसतरं सुखं।

And what is pleasure even more spiritual that that not of the flesh? When a bhikkhu who has ended the defilements reviews their mind free from greed, hate, and delusion, pleasure and happiness arises. This is called pleasure even more spiritual that that not of the flesh.

Katamā ca, bhikkhave, nirāmisā upekkhā? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sukhassa ca pahānā, dukkhassa ca pahānā, pubbeva somanassadomanassānaṁ atthaṅgamā, adukkhamasukhaṁ upekkhāsatipārisuddhiṁ catutthaṁ jhānaṁ upasampajja viharati. Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, nirāmisā upekkhā.
And what is equanimity not of the flesh? It’s when, giving up pleasure and pain, and ending former happiness and sadness, a bhikkhu enters and remains in the fourth jhāna, without pleasure or pain, with pure equanimity and mindfulness. This is called equanimity not of the flesh.
कतमा च, भिक्खवे, निरामिसा निरामिसतरा उपेक्खा? या खो, भिक्खवे, खीणासवस्स भिक्खुनो रागा चित्तं विमुत्तं पच्चवेक्खतो, दोसा चित्तं विमुत्तं पच्चवेक्खतो, मोहा चित्तं विमुत्तं पच्चवेक्खतो उप्पज्जति उपेक्खा, अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, निरामिसा निरामिसतरा उपेक्खा।

And what is liberation of the flesh? Liberation connected with form is liberation of the flesh.
कतमो च, भिक्खवे, निरामिसो विमोक्खो? अरूपप्पटिसंयुत्तो विमोक्खो निरामिसो विमोक्खो।
Katamo ca, bhikkhave, nirāmiso vimokkho? Arūpappaṭisaṁyutto vimokkho nirāmiso vimokkho.
And what is liberation not of the flesh? Liberation connected with the formless is liberation not of the flesh.
कतमो च, भिक्खवे, निरामिसा निरामिसतरो विमोक्खो? यो खो, भिक्खवे, खीणासवस्स भिक्खुनो रागा चित्तं विमुत्तं पच्चवेक्खतो, दोसा चित्तं विमुत्तं पच्चवेक्खतो, मोहा चित्तं विमुत्तं पच्चवेक्खतो उप्पज्जति विमोक्खो, अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, निरामिसा निरामिसतरो विमोक्खो”ति।

Sīvakaaṭṭhasataṁ bhikkhu, pubbe ñāṇañca bhikkhunā; Samaṇabrāhmaṇā tīṇi, suddhikañca nirāmisanti.
वेदनासंयुत्तं समत्तं।
Vedanāsaṁyuttaṁ samattaṁ.
