Macchariyappahānasutta

Giving Up Stinginess

“पञ्चन्नं, भिक्खवे, मच्छरियानं पहानाय समुच्छेदाय ब्रह्मचरियं वुस्सति। कतमेसं पञ्चन्नं? आवासमच्छरियस्स पहानाय समुच्छेदाय ब्रह्मचरियं वुस्सति; कुलमच्छरियस्स … लाभमच्छरियस्स … वण्णमच्छरियस्स … धम्ममच्छरियस्स पहानाय समुच्छेदाय ब्रह्मचरियं वुस्सति। इमेसं खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्चन्नं मच्छरियानं पहानाय समुच्छेदाय ब्रह्मचरियं वुस्सती”ति।

“Pañcannaṁ, bhikkhave, macchariyānaṁ pahānāya samucchedāya brahmacariyaṁ vussati. Katamesaṁ pañcannaṁ? Āvāsamacchariyassa pahānāya samucchedāya brahmacariyaṁ vussati; kulamacchariyassa … lābhamacchariyassa … vaṇṇamacchariyassa … dhammamacchariyassa pahānāya samucchedāya brahmacariyaṁ vussati. Imesaṁ kho, bhikkhave, pañcannaṁ macchariyānaṁ pahānāya samucchedāya brahmacariyaṁ vussatī”ti.

“Bhikkhus, the spiritual life is lived to give up and cut out these five kinds of stinginess. What five? Stinginess with dwellings, families, material possessions, praise, and the teachings. The spiritual life is lived to give up and cut out these five kinds of stinginess.”
