Skillful Root

सावत्थियं विहरति।

Sāvatthiyaṁ viharati.

At Sāvatthī.

“दारुणो, भिक्खवे, लाभसक्कारसिलोको।

“Dāruṇo, bhikkhave, lābhasakkārasiloko.

“Possessions, honor, and popularity are brutal …

लाभसक्कारसिलोकेन अभिभूतस्स परियादिण्णचित्तस्स, भिक्खवे, देवदत्तस्स कुसलमूलं समुच्छेदमगमा।

Lābhasakkārasilokena abhibhūtassa pariyādiṇṇacittassa, bhikkhave, devadattassa kusalamūlaṁ samucchedamagamā.

Devadatta cut off his skillful root because his mind was overcome and overwhelmed by possessions, honor, and popularity.

एवं दारुणो खो, भिक्खवे, लाभसक्कारसिलोको …पे… सिक्खितब्बन्”ति।

Evaṁ dāruṇo kho, bhikkhave, lābhasakkārasiloko …pe… sikkhitabban”ti.

So brutal are possessions, honor, and popularity. …”
