जागरसुत्त

Jāgarasutta

Awake

सावत्थिनिदानं।

Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

At Sāvatthī.

एकमन्तं ठिता खो सा देवता भगवतो सन्तिके इमं गाथं अभासि:

Ekamantaṁ ṭhitā kho sā devatā bhagavato santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi:

Standing to one side, that deity recited this verse in the Buddha’s presence:

“कति जागरतं सुत्ता, कति सुत्तेसु जागरा; कतिभि रजमादेति, कतिभि परिसुज्झती”ति।

“Kati jāgarataṁ suttā, kati suttesu jāgarā; Katibhi1 rajamādeti, katibhi2 parisujjhatī”ti.

“How many sleep while others wake? How many wake among the sleeping? By how many do you gather dust? By how many are you cleansed?”

“पञ्च जागरतं सुत्ता, पञ्च सुत्तेसु जागरा; पञ्चभि रजमादेति, पञ्चभि परिसुज्झती”ति।

“Pañca jāgarataṁ suttā, pañca suttesu jāgarā; Pañcabhi3 rajamādeti, pañcabhi4 parisujjhatī”ti.

“Five sleep while others wake. Five wake among the sleeping. By five you gather dust. By five you’re cleansed.”
