Dutiyasoṇasutta

With Soṇa (2nd)

एवं मे सुतं—एकं समयं भगवा राजगहे विहरति वेळुवने कलन्दकनिवापे।

Evaṁ me sutaṁ—ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā rājagahe viharati veḷuvane kalandakanivāpe.

So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha, in the Bamboo Grove, the squirrels’ feeding ground.

अथ खो सोणो गहपतिपुत्तो येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नं खो सोणं गहपतिपुत्तं भगवा एतदवोच:

Atha kho soṇo gahapatiputto yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho soṇaṁ gahapatiputtaṁ bhagavā etadavoca:

Then the householder Soṇa went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him:

“ये हि केचि, सोण, समणा वा ब्राह्मणा वा रूपं नप्पजानन्ति, रूपसमुदयं नप्पजानन्ति, रूपनिरोधं नप्पजानन्ति, रूपनिरोधगामिनिं पटिपदं नप्पजानन्ति; वेदनं नप्पजानन्ति, वेदनासमुदयं नप्पजानन्ति, वेदनानिरोधं नप्पजानन्ति, वेदनानिरोधगामिनिं पटिपदं नप्पजानन्ति; सञ्ञं नप्पजानन्ति …पे… सङ्खारे नप्पजानन्ति, सङ्खारसमुदयं नप्पजानन्ति, सङ्खारनिरोधं नप्पजानन्ति, सङ्खारनिरोधगामिनिं पटिपदं नप्पजानन्ति; विञ्ञाणं नप्पजानन्ति, विञ्ञाणसमुदयं नप्पजानन्ति, विञ्ञाणनिरोधं नप्पजानन्ति, विञ्ञाणनिरोधगामिनिं पटिपदं नप्पजानन्ति। न मे ते, सोण, समणा वा ब्राह्मणा वा समणेसु वा समणसम्मता ब्राह्मणेसु वा ब्राह्मणसम्मता, न च पन ते आयस्मन्तो सामञ्ञत्थं वा ब्रह्मञ्ञत्थं वा दिट्ठेव धम्मे सयं अभिञ्ञा सच्छिकत्वा उपसम्पज्ज विहरन्ति।

“Ye hi keci, soṇa, samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā rūpaṁ nappajānanti, rūpasamudayaṁ nappajānanti, rūpanirodhaṁ nappajānanti, rūpanirodhagāminiṁ paṭipadaṁ nappajānanti; vedanaṁ nappajānanti, vedanāsamudayaṁ nappajānanti, vedanānirodhaṁ nappajānanti, vedanānirodhagāminiṁ paṭipadaṁ nappajānanti; saññaṁ nappajānanti …pe… saṅkhāre nappajānanti, saṅkhārasamudayaṁ nappajānanti, saṅkhāranirodhaṁ nappajānanti, saṅkhāranirodhagāminiṁ paṭipadaṁ nappajānanti; viññāṇaṁ nappajānanti, viññāṇasamudayaṁ nappajānanti, viññāṇanirodhaṁ nappajānanti, viññāṇanirodhagāminiṁ paṭipadaṁ nappajānanti. Na me te, soṇa, samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā samaṇesu vā samaṇasammatā brāhmaṇesu vā brāhmaṇasammatā, na ca pana te āyasmanto sāmaññatthaṁ vā brahmaññatthaṁ vā diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharanti.

“Soṇa, there are ascetics and brahmins who don’t understand form, its origin, its cessation, and the practice that leads to its cessation. They don’t understand feeling … perception … functioning patterns … consciousness, its origin, its cessation, and the practice that leads to its cessation. I don’t deem them as true ascetics and brahmins. Those venerables don’t realize the goal of life as an ascetic or brahmin, and don’t live having realized it with their own insight.

ये च खो केचि, सोण, समणा वा ब्राह्मणा वा रूपं पजानन्ति, रूपसमुदयं पजानन्ति, रूपनिरोधं पजानन्ति, रूपनिरोधगामिनिं पटिपदं पजानन्ति; वेदनं पजानन्ति …पे… सञ्ञं पजानन्ति … सङ्खारे पजानन्ति … विञ्ञाणं पजानन्ति, विञ्ञाणसमुदयं पजानन्ति, विञ्ञाणनिरोधं पजानन्ति, विञ्ञाणनिरोधगामिनिं पटिपदं पजानन्ति। ते च खो मे, सोण, समणा वा ब्राह्मणा वा समणेसु चेव समणसम्मता ब्राह्मणेसु च ब्राह्मणसम्मता, ते च पनायस्मन्तो सामञ्ञत्थञ्च ब्रह्मञ्ञत्थञ्च दिट्ठेव धम्मे सयं अभिञ्ञा सच्छिकत्वा उपसम्पज्ज विहरन्ती”ति।

Te ca kho me, soṇa, samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā samaṇesu ceva samaṇasammatā brāhmaṇesu ca brāhmaṇasammatā, te ca panāyasmanto sāmaññatthañca brahmaññatthañca diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharantī”ti.

There are ascetics and brahmins who do understand form, its origin, its cessation, and the practice that leads to its cessation. They do understand feeling … perception … functioning patterns … consciousness, its origin, its cessation, and the practice that leads to its cessation. I deem them as true ascetics and brahmins. Those venerables realize the goal of life as an ascetic or brahmin, and live having realized it with their own insight.”
