Dukkhasutta

Suffering

सावत्थिनिदानं।

Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

At Sāvatthī.

एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो आयस्मा राधो भगवन्तं एतदवोच:

Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā rādho bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

Seated to one side, Venerable Rādha said to the Buddha:

“‘दुक्खं, दुक्खन्ऽति, भन्ते, वुच्चति। कतमं नु खो, भन्ते, दुक्खन्”ति?

“‘dukkhaṁ, dukkhan’ti, bhante, vuccati. Katamaṁ nu kho, bhante, dukkhan”ti?

“Sir, they speak of this thing called ‘suffering’. What is suffering?”

“रूपं खो, राध, दुक्खं, वेदना दुक्खा, सञ्ञा दुक्खा, सङ्खारा दुक्खा, विञ्ञाणं दुक्खं।

“Rūpaṁ kho, rādha, dukkhaṁ, vedanā dukkhā, saññā dukkhā, saṅkhārā dukkhā, viññāṇaṁ dukkhaṁ.

“Rādha, form, feeling, perception, functioning patterns, and consciousness are suffering.

एवं पस्सं …पे… नापरं इत्थत्तायाति पजानाती”ति।

Evaṁ passaṁ …pe… nāparaṁ itthattāyāti pajānātī”ti.

Seeing this … They understand: ‘… there is no return to any state of existence.’”

पञ्चमं।

Pañcamaṁ.
