A Beggar
सावत्थिनिदानं।

At Sāvatthī.
अथ खो भिक्खको ब्राह्मणो येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवता सद्धिं सम्मोदि।
Atha kho bhikkhako brāhmaṇo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavatā saddhiṁ sammodi.
Then a begging brahmin went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him.
सम्मोदनीयं कथं सारणीयं वीतिसारेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो भिक्खको ब्राह्मणो भगवन्तं एतदवोच: “अहम्पि खो, भो गोतम, भिक्खको, भवम्पि भिक्खको, इध नो किं नानाकरणन्”ति?
Sammodanīyaṁ kathaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ vītisāretvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho bhikkhako brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “ahampi kho, bho gotama, bhikkhako, bhavampi bhikkhako, idha no kiṁ nānākaraṇan”ti?
When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to the Buddha, “Master Gotama, both you and I are beggars. What, then, is the difference between us?”
“न तेन भिक्खको होति, यावता भिक्खते परे; विस्सं धम्मं समादाय, भिक्खु होति न तावता।
“Na tena bhikkhako hoti, yāvatā bhikkhate pare; Vissaṁ dhammaṁ samādāya, bhikkhu hoti na tāvatā.
“You don’t become a beggar just by begging from others. One who has undertaken domestic duties has not yet become a bhikkhu.
योध पुञ्ञञ्च पापञ्च, बाहित्वा ब्रह्मचरियं; सङ्खाय लोके चरति, स वे भिक्खूति वुच्चती”ति।
Yodha puññañca pāpañca, bāhitvā brahmacariyaṁ; Saṅkhāya loke carati, sa ve bhikkhūti vuccatī”ti.
But one living a spiritual life who has banished both merit and evil, and wanders having assessed the world, is said to be a bhikkhu.”
एवं वुत्ते, भिक्खको ब्राह्मणो भगवन्तं एतदवोच: “अभिक्कन्तं, भो गोतम, अभिक्कन्तं, भो गोतम …पे… उपासकं मं भवं गोतमो धारेतु अज्जतग्गे पाणुपेतं सरणं गतन्”ति।
Evaṁ vutte, bhikkhako brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “abhikkantaṁ, bho gotama, abhikkantaṁ, bho gotama …pe… upāsakaṁ maṁ bhavaṁ gotamo dhāretu ajjatagge pāṇupetaṁ saraṇaṁ gatan”ti.
When he had spoken, the begging brahmin said to the Buddha, “Excellent, Master Gotama! Excellent! … From this day forth, may Master Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.”
