States of Existence

“तयोमे, भिक्खवे, भवा। कतमे तयो? कामभवो, रूपभवो, अरूपभवो—इमे खो, भिक्खवे, तयो भवा।

“Tayome, bhikkhave, bhavā. Katame tayo? Kāmabhavo, rūpabhavo, arūpabhavo—ime kho, bhikkhave, tayo bhavā.

“There are these three states of existence. What three? Existence in the sensual realm, the realm of luminous form, and the formless realm. These are the three states of existence.

इमेसं खो, भिक्खवे, तिण्णन्नं भवानं अभिञ्ञाय परिञ्ञाय परिक्खयाय पहानाय …पे… अयं अरियो अट्ठङ्गिको मग्गो भावेतब्बो”ति।

Imesaṁ kho, bhikkhave, tiṇṇannaṁ bhavānaṁ abhiññāya pariññāya parikkhayāya pahānāya …pe… ayaṁ ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo bhāvetabbo”ti.

The noble eightfold path should be developed for the direct knowledge, complete understanding, finishing, and giving up of these three states of existence.”
