Xain'd Sleena

Xain'd Sleena is an side-scrolling arcade videogame from 1986. The main character, Xain, is a galactic bounty-hunter or freedom fighter who must defeat evil forces who oppress five planets, each with different weather and geology, including forest, desert, and volcanoes, and a final metallic planet. Each planet is played with horizontal scroll, and after a final stage boss, the player plants a bomb (to the boss's shelter), jumps to a spaceship and plays an interlude stage during which he must break through enemy ships while heading to the next planet. After three planets there is a fight against a giant mothership.

The player can select the order in which he wants to play the various planets, so, there is no 'official' sequence of play.

The planets:

Cleemalt Soa: An asteroid level without obvious atmosphere—there is a free space section in mid level, where the player has to carefully jump across what seems to be asteroids, to cross the gap. The boss resembles a robotic ninja and wields a ray sword.

Lagto Soa: A jungle world full of giant insects, carnivorous plants, as well as a dinosaur-like creature in the middle of a swamp. The boss is bipedal tank-robot; after destroying the tank Xain has to battle the creature inside.

Cleedos Soa: Desert world. Think Dune, including sandworms. Mid level is a large mystical temple, on top of which Xain has to defeat a giant Egyptian head. The boss has a gun and a jet-pack.

Kworal Soa: Underwater world—full of fish, jellyfish, and lobster-like aliens. The boss fires a harpoon and is very agile.

Guwld Soa: The volcanic world—difficult level for maneuvering, as eruptions will kill you, as will falling into lava. The final boss here wears power armor and shoots heavy laser blasts on short range, or missile volleys at long range. The boss is heavily armored and fires both ray gun and torpedoes at the player.

Metallic Planet: This level is very long and features a few unique enemies. The player faces some of the previously encountered bosses. Curious enough, killing the very last boss is optional, as Xain plants the bomb and can bypass him (on the first five planets the bomb is planted after the boss perishes).

This was one of the first games to allow the player to crouch, ease up, and double jump. The graphics and sound were far superior to any home computer video game of that era.

The planets in the game are cognates to the Solar System: Jupiter to Guwld Soa, Neptune to Kworal Soa, Saturn to Cleedos Soa, Uranus to Lagto Soa, Pluto to Cleemalt Soa.
