Madeira cake

Madeira cake (Portuguese :Bolo Inglês; literally, English Cake) is a popular Portuguese traditional type of English cake as well as a popular traditional dish of English The Madeira Cake is a light cake not unlike a simple pound cake. Madeira Cake is rectangular in shape and has the appearance of a small loaf. Madeira wine may sometimes be added to the cake during baking. The Madeira Cake is often thought to originate from the Madeira Islands; however, that is not the case. The inhabitants of the Madeira Islands, however, have developed a cake, which is very similar to the Madeira Cake.

History

The history of Madeira cake dates back to an original recipe in the 18th century. The Madeira Cake was named after the wine, which accompanied the dish. The cake was often served traditionally with Madeira wine during the 19th century, but it is more common now for the cake to be served with tea or sweet wine.

Weddings

Madeira cake is a popular choice for contemporary wedding cakes. With a firmer texture than Victoria Sponge cake, it is more suitable for covering with sugar paste icing. It is also a popular choice for novelty or carved cakes, where the cake is easier to carve prior to covering in Butter Cream and or Sugar paste.
