January
January 1 - Same-sex marriage becomes legal in New Hampshire. January 2 - A partial-statewide smoking ban will go into effect in North Carolina barring smoking in bars, resturants, public places, and vehicles. The new law exempts cigar bars, private clubs, and some hotel/motels. January 10 - Deadline for America's Space Prize for private manned orbital spaceflight. January 19 - A special election will be held in Massachusetts to elect a new senator to take the vacant seat held by the late Edward Kennedy.
February
February 11 – On STS-131, the Space Shuttle Atlantis is planned to use the MPLM Raffaello to deliver science racks to the laboratories of the International Space Station.
March
March 7 - The 82nd Academy Awards are scheduled to take place.
April
April 1 - 2010 US Census will be conducted. April 8 – On STS-132, the Space Shuttle Discovery will carry an integrated cargo carrier, and deliver a Russian Mini Research Module to the Zarya module of the International Space Station.

July 5 - Wisconsin's statewide smoking ban in restaurants and taverns takes effect.
August
August 31 – Deadline for withdrawal of US combat troops from Iraq, announced February 27, 2009.

November 2 - United States midterm elections for the House of Representatives and Senate. November - GM expects to release a production model of the Chevrolet Volt electric car

General Motors had expected to produce a commercially viable model of its hydrogen-fueled drive-by-wire concept car, the Hy-wire, as per a 2003 announcement. President Barack Obama will give his first State of the Union Address. The International Space Station will be completed. The Space Shuttle program will be retired by NASA and replaced by Project Constellation. This project will include new space vehicles called Ares I and Ares V launch vehicles, as well as the Orion capable of traveling to the Space Station, to the Moon, and eventually to Mars. Final mission of American Space Shuttle (STS-134) is slated to begin. Space Shuttle Discovery is set to fly one of the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometers and ExPRESS Logistics Carriers to the International Space Station and leave them there permanently (most likely in September, but final dates will vary depending on funding or weather).
